The North East Arid Zone Development Programme (NEAZDP), in collaboration with the nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) under its operational coverage, has flagged off a large-scale mosquito fumigation campaign aimed at curbing the increasing cases of malaria across communities in Yobe State.
The official flag-off ceremony was held on Thursday, in Gashua, headquarters of Bade Local Government Area.
The Programme Manager of Northeast Arid Zone Development Programme (NEAZDP), Dr. Mulima Idi Mato, described the exercise as part of the programme’s ongoing commitment to public health and rural development.
Dr. Mato commended Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration for its sustained support to NEAZDP’s integrated rural development programmes.
He explained that malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity in the state, stressing that fumigation, combined with proper hygiene and environmental management, will significantly reduce health risks.
Speaking on behalf of the Council, the Vice Chairman of Bade LGA applauded NEAZDP for the proactive initiative, while calling on residents to cooperate with health workers and embrace clean hygiene practices to ensure sustainable malaria prevention.
Stakeholders at the event pledged their support for the programme, noting that the initiative will not only protect households from malaria but also enhance productivity by reducing the burden of sickness in rural communities.
The campaign, which begins in Bade, will be extended to Bursari, Geidam, Jakusko, Karasuwa, Machina, Nguru, Yunusari, and Yusufari LGAs, with fumigation exercises targeting mosquito breeding sites, public facilities, and residential areas to reduce the prevalence of malaria in affected communities.
The ceremony attracted a wide range of stakeholders, including the Executive Chairman of Bade LGA, represented by the Vice Chairman, the Council Secretary, Environmental Health staff, NEAZDP management and staff, community leaders, civil-based organizations (CBOs), youth groups, and other partners.
The fumigation campaign will be monitored across all participating LGAs to ensure effectiveness, while health education campaigns will run simultaneously to sensitize residents on the importance of sanitation, use of mosquito nets, and environmental cleanliness.
The folks in these communities have shared their happiness about the fumigation efforts aimed at tackling malaria, a significant issue affecting the lives.
They also praised the NEAZDP for rolling out development projects in their areas, which are making a real difference for people living in rural settings.
