A Sponsored workshop began today, aiming to empower women in Nigerian public office and engage male allies to promote gender equity in governance. Dr. Salma Anas Kolo, Special Adviser to the President on Health, opened the three-day capacity-building event, highlighting inclusive leadership as a national imperative.

The workshop, organized under GIZ’s Support to the Reform of the Public Service Programme, will equip participants with tools for leadership, policy influence, and cross-gender collaboration.

Speaking at a Gender awareness Advocacy Workshop in Abuja, Dr. Salma encouraged women to challenge male dominance in politics and also work on building confidence and unity among themselves.

The three-day workshop, organized by the German Agency for International Cooperation, GIZ, and co-funded by the European Union, aims to empower women in public office and strengthen the role of malei allies in promoting gender equality.

Dr. Salma commended GIZ for supporting women’s development, saying inclusive leadership is key to national progress.

The event brought together women leaders, civil society members, government officials, and the media from across the country.

The event which will end by Thursday, October 16, and is expected to produce a roadmap for increasing women’s participation in public administration.

The representatives delivering goodwill messages – including from the Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, the Permanent Secretary of the Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs, Prof. Ibrahim Umara of the Political Science Department at the University of Maiduguri, Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir, and Aisha Ibrahim Kwaya Bura, National Chairperson of the National Association of Women Journalists – all lauded the organizers’ efforts in promoting gender equality and advocating for greater female participation in governance and politics.
