Stakeholders Mobilize for Passage of Women’s Legislative Seats Bill

By Abubakar Waziri

In a move to boost female participation in governance, stakeholders are rallying support for a constitutional amendment to create special legislative seats for women. The push was highlighted during a consultation and strategy meeting on the bill.

Mr. Clement Nwankwo, Executive Director of the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), charged journalists with building public support.

He outlined the bill’s direct mechanism establishing 37 additional seats for women in the Senate, 37 in the House of Representatives, and three in every State House of Assembly.

“This constitutional alteration bill is designed to provide a remedy for the historically low representation of women in our legislative houses,” Mr. Nwankwo stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Akin Rotimi, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, called on media and civil society organizations to champion the bill’s passage. He further appealed to political parties as well as religious and traditional institutions to lend their support, underscoring the vital role women have in driving the nation’s development.
