Stakeholders at a town hall meeting advocate the need to amplify women’s representation in politics, particularly in Nigeria, where women make up a significant portion of voters but hold very few governance positions
The two days Townhall meeting held at Amada event Centre Maiduguri, focused on the proposed Special Seats Bill for Women in Politics, which aims to dedicate seats for women in both the House of Representatives and Senate, as well as State houses of Assembly.
This initiative seeks to provide equal opportunities for women to participate in politics, rather than simply advocating for gender equality.
A lead Facilitator at the Event who is also an advocate of the Women’s bill, Patience Saleh said they have already engaged Women led organisations and other relevant Stakeholders on how to achieve the propose bill and ensure equitable distribution of the Political Offices for Women.
She explained that they are planning to engage the National Assembly on the proposed bill which they had wanted to become law before the next general elections by 2027.
Member Representing MMC at the State Assembly Ali Kotoko and Dr. Ibrahim Shettima, highlighted women’s capabilities and the steps necessary to achieve meaningful representation in governance, urging the system to respond to the Special Seats Bill.
Other Speakers including Director Women, Ministry of Women Affairs, and Humanitarian leaders highlighted the need for collective efforts to support the bill’s passage into law.
Similarly, Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists Borno State Council, Comrade Abdulkarim Haruna reiterated the commitment of the Media sector amplify the special seat bill and advocate for greater Women participation in the Nigeria’s Political spheres.
The meeting concluded with a petition-signing in support of the bill, marking a crucial step towards promoting women’s representation in Nigerian politics.
