The Zamfara State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRESS) has emphasized that improved nutrition and sound animal husbandry practices are critical to enhancing the productivity and resilience of indigenous livestock breeds, which are increasingly threatened by climate change and rising disease incidence.
The Project Coordinator of L-PRESS in Zamfara State,Alhaji Nasiru Mohammed, made this known during a two-day training workshop on Business Models for Pasture Development held in Gusau, the State capital.
Alhaji Mohammed said ,there is an urgent need for a comprehensive action plan that would ensure a sustainable and profitable livestock business environment.
“Better Nutrition and good animal husbandry practices play a very critical role in productivity and resilience of our indigenous breeds of livestock which are being threatened by climate change phenomena and disease incidence”
“Therefore, in the face of these daunting challenges, the need for serious action plan becomes necessary in order to ensure a sustainably profitable livestock business atmosphere. which can be achieved by introduction of highly nutritious pasture plants in commercial quantity in order to compliment the conventional feeds available to our livestock farmers”
He explained that, one of the most effective strategies is the introduction of highly nutritious pasture plants in commercial quantities to complement existing conventional feeds used by livestock farmers.
While welcoming participants to the workshop, the Project Coordinator said the training is crucial to improving productivity, resilience, and commercialization across key livestock value chains where Zamfara State holds a comparative advantage, including beef, dairy, sheep, and goats.
“Ladies and gentlemen, what you are about to learn today and tomorrow, if properly embraced and put into practice, could be the key to your economic breakthrough in the livestock business environment,” he stated.
He urged participants to pay close attention, actively engage in discussions, and ask questions whenever necessary.
Also contributing, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of the L-PRESS Project in the state Dr. Kabiru Muhammad revealed that, the training had brought together livestock herders and animal-feed traders to teach them techniques that would improve the processing of pasture in order to produce high-quality animal feed and boost economic growth in the livestock business.
According to him, the L-PRESS Project is being implemented in 20 states across the country, and its purpose was to enhance livestock production, covering animal health, feed production, and the improvement of livestock-related businesses.
He added that, the aimed was to strengthening the participants business activities.
Dr Kabir Mohammed emphasised that, Nutritious feed is extremely important for improving the health and productivity of animals.
The Participants for the two day training were drawn from various part of the state.
