Legal practitioners in Nigeria have been urged to uphold professionalism, ethical conduct and continuous learning to safeguard the integrity and future of the legal profession.
The call was made on Saturday in Kano during the inauguration of the Nureini Jimoh, SAN Chambers and its maiden symposium, held at the chambers’ new office at No. 4 Gidado Road, Kano.
The event drew senior jurists, legal practitioners and key stakeholders from across the country, highlighting Kano’s growing role as a centre for legal discourse.
Chairman of the symposium, retired Justice Abdu Aboki, welcomed participants and lauded Mr. Nureini Jimoh, SAN, for his foresight in organising what he described as the first initiative of its kind in Kano.
He said the symposium was a meaningful contribution to society and a demonstration of Jimoh’s commitment to the growth and integrity of the legal process, describing him as obedient, honest and dedicated to service.
Justice Aboki stressed the importance of mentorship in strengthening the profession, urging senior lawyers to deliberately guide and support younger members of the Bar to promote professionalism and a respectful society.
He also commended the chambers for naming sections of its edifice after notable legal practitioners, noting that preserving professional legacies was vital to inspiring future generations.
According to him, the future of Nigeria’s legal system depends on the collective efforts of committed individuals and institutions working towards effective administration of justice.
In his presentation, Honourable Justice Tijjani Abubakar of the Supreme Court congratulated Nureini Jimoh on his attainment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and spoke on the future of legal practice in the country.
He identified the digital era, cybersecurity, digitalisation and artificial intelligence as defining features of modern legal practice, stressing that while artificial intelligence is necessary, it should only assist lawyers and not replace professional judgment.
Justice Abubakar called for stronger collaboration among the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigerian Law School and other stakeholders to address emerging challenges.
He also encouraged specialization and the empowerment of young lawyers to enable them remain competitive in a rapidly evolving legal environment.
Also speaking, Justice Habeeb Abiru said the legal profession was currently facing serious challenges, particularly unethical practices, which he attributed partly to the growing number of lawyers and economic pressures.
He urged practitioners to uphold the dignity and core values of the profession, strengthen partnerships and continually update their knowledge and skills in order to remain relevant and protect the ethics of legal practice in Nigeria.
The Convener , Nureini Jimoh SAN Appreciated the dignitaries for honouring their invitation,and pledged to accord all the needed support for the profession to continue to grow.
The Symposium themed ” The Future of Legal Practice in Nigeria :Trends ,Challenges and Opportunities attracted learned colleagues,friends and well wishers from different parts of the country .
