In the spirit of Christmas and New year celebration, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has donated essential food and non-food items to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in Yobe State.
The initiative which took place at the Potiskum Medium Security Custodial Center, is a significant step aimed at improving the welfare of inmates during the festive season,
The State Coordinator NEDC, Professor Ali Ibrahim Abbas, who presented the relief materials to the State Controller of Corrections and the management of the custodial center. said the items which included 110 bags of rice, 110 cartons of spaghetti, 530 blankets, and 265 mats, would go a long way in supporting the facility.
During the presentation, Professor Abbas emphasized the Commission’s commitment to enhancing the living conditions of inmates during the year-end celebrations.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Potiskum Local Government Area (LGA), Salisu Muktari expressed gratitude on behalf of the local community and the State Government, highlighting the significance of timely assistance, especially during the harmattan season, assuring that efforts would be made to further support the inmates, particularly in providing sustainable water supply and other welfare services.
Responding, the Controller of Correctional Facility
Mr. Ortsergah J. Terver, acknowledged the donation and expressed optimism that the items would address some of the major challenges faced by inmates.
He thanked NEDC and the state government for their support and assured that the materials would be utilized responsibly.
In addition to the donations, NEDC has established a Digital Literacy Center at the Potiskum facility, aimed at empowering inmates to reintegrate successfully into society after serving their sentences.
The center is equipped with desktops, laptops, printers, and solar power systems, providing a vital resource for education and skill development.
This initiative reflects NEDC’s broader mission to enhance the welfare of inmates and support their rehabilitation, fostering a more humane correctional system in Nigeria.
