Yobe State Governor, His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations in the state with a call for sustained support for families of fallen heroes and war veterans.
Speaking at the event, held in the Government House Damaturu, Governor Buni expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for the opportunity to mark the annual occasion, describing Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a cherished moment to honour the gallantry, sacrifices, and patriotism of Nigerian soldiers.
He noted that while the nation mourns soldiers who paid the supreme price, it remains proud of their courage and commitment to the unity and territorial integrity of Nigeria.
Governor Buni assured that the Yobe State Government would continue to support the families of fallen heroes and work closely with the Nigerian Legion to improve the welfare of veterans.
He also appealed to corporate organisations, religious bodies, philanthropists, and well-meaning citizens to complement government efforts in caring for veterans and their dependents.
As part of the ceremony, the Governor announced a donation of 30 million naira on behalf of the state government, in addition to a personal donation of another 5 million naira, to support the welfare of veterans and families of fallen heroes.
He urged the public to donate generously in honour of the fallen heroes and called for prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the service chiefs, and security personnel working to ensure peace and stability in the country.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Yobe State Chapter, Lieutenant Goji Barma (Rtd), said Armed Forces Remembrance Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the courage, resilience, and dedication of men and women who served in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He said many veterans continue to face challenges after retirement, including health issues and difficulties transitioning to civilian life.
Lieutenant Birma commended Governor Buni for his continued support of the veterans’ community and congratulated him on his recent appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Chairman of the Committee on Strategic Conflict Resolution and Mobilisation.
He also highlighted some challenges confronting veterans in the state, including welfare concerns and unemployment among children of ex-servicemen.
The event, which marked the beginning of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day activities in Yobe State, attracted government officials, security personnel, veterans, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and members of the public.
