NEDC Hands Over Renovation Project of Centre for Special Education, Gombe to Contractor

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has officially handed over the renovation project of the Centre for Special Education in Gombe State to the contractor, marking the commencement of rehabilitation works aimed at improving learning conditions for children with special needs.

The handover ceremony took place at the Centre in Gombe, with officials of the NEDC, Gombe State Ministry of Education, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and other stakeholders in attendance.

Speaking at the event, the Gombe State Coordinator of the NEDC, Architect Usman Muhammad, said the project is part of the Commission’s mandate to rebuild critical social infrastructure and support inclusive education across the North East region.

Architect Muhammad explained that the renovation will provide a safer, more accessible and conducive learning environment for pupils with special needs, adding that the Commission is committed to ensuring quality execution of the project in line with approved specifications.

He urged the contractor to adhere strictly to project standards and timelines, assuring that the NEDC would closely monitor the work to guarantee value for money and sustainability.

In her remarks, the Gombe State Commissioner for Education, Professor Aishatu Maigari, commended the North East Development Commission for prioritising special needs education in the state. She described the intervention as timely and impactful, noting that the Centre for Special Education plays a critical role in catering for vulnerable children who require specialised learning support.

Professor Maigari assured that the state government would provide all necessary support to ensure the successful execution of the project, stressing that inclusive education remains a key priority of the Gombe State Government.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Professor Erom Toro Jokthan, said the renovation would significantly improve teaching and learning at the Centre. He noted that the project would enhance access, safety and functionality of facilities, thereby improving educational outcomes for learners with special needs.

Professor Jokthan thanked the NEDC for its continued collaboration with SUBEB and pledged effective supervision to ensure the project meets the desired objectives.

The contractor, Engr Abdulqadir A. Haruna while accepting the project, assured stakeholders of commitment to delivering quality work within the stipulated timeframe.

The renovation of the Centre for Special Education in Gombe is expected to strengthen inclusive basic education and improve the welfare and learning experience of pupils with special needs in the state.
