Nigerian Army Renews Commitment to Peace in the Northwest

In a spirited declaration of resolve, the Commander of the Nigerian Army’s 1 Brigade in Gusau, Brigadier General Opurum Timothy, has reassured the people of Zamfara State and the Northwest of the military’s unwavering dedication to ensure peace and stability.

Speaking to journalists at the 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA) event held at the 1 Brigade Cantonment in Gusau, General Opurum highlighted the army’s relentless operations to eradicate banditry and restore calm to the region.

“Bello Turji, the notorious bandit leader, is on the run because of our intensified military actions,” he asserted.
“We have dismantled many of his networks and will continue pressing forward to neutralise remaining threats.”

Known by his nickname “Jar Kunama” (Sting of the Scorpion), General Opurum also commended the people of Zamfara for their support in providing intelligence, which according to him has contributed to significant breakthroughs.

The WASA event, an annual celebration of Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, brought together soldiers, officers, and their families in a festive atmosphere to mark the end of the year’s military activities. The event featured cultural displays, taekwondo exhibitions, tug-of-war contests, and the ceremonial lighting of a bonfire by General Opurum.

Governor Dauda Lawal, represented by the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Meriga, praised the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their dedication to restoring peace in Zamfara State.

The event was graced by dignitaries, including traditional rulers and heads of security agencies, underscoring the collective effort to tackle insecurity in the region.

With soldiers’ steadfast commitment and the continued collaboration between security forces and local communities, the Nigerian Army remains optimistic about achieving lasting peace in Zamfara and beyond.
