The Borno State Acting Governor, Dr. Umar Usman Kadafur, has tasked the twenty-seven newly inaugurated Local Government Chairmen in the state to make security and grassroots development their top priorities.
The Acting Governor gave the charge during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected chairmen at Government House in Maiduguri.
Radio Nigeria Correspondent reports that this marks the third time the administration of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum is conducting local government elections since its inception.
Addressing the new council bosses, Acting Governor Kadafur enjoined them to ensure accountability and transparency while discharging their duties. He further urged the officials to reside within their local government headquarters, strictly warning them against unnecessary travel or staying outside their assigned domains.
He further charged the chairmen to emulate the leadership qualities and developmental strides of Governor Zulum to ensure a total transformation of the grassroots. The Acting Governor also used the occasion to appreciate the efforts of past local government chairmen for their relentless service to the state.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele, noted that the inauguration signifies a new dawn for local government administration in Borno. He urged the chairmen to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate.
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Borno State Chapter, Alhaji Ali Bolori, expressed gratitude to the people for their mandate, promising to fulfill their campaign promises.
Alhaji Bolori also commended the State House of Assembly for the recent amendment extending the tenure of elected local government officials from two to three years. He noted that this extension would provide them with ample opportunity to deliver the dividends of democracy to their respective local government councils.
The high point of the event was the administration of the oaths of office and allegiance to the elected officials by Justice Haruna Mshelia, who represented the State Chief Judge.
