The Bauchi State Technical Working Group on Climate Change and Health Adaptation has concluded a detailed desk review of the National Adaptation Plan, aimed at aligning the document with the state’s peculiar climate-related health priorities and vulnerabilities.
The two-day engagement, organised by the Bauchi State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare with support from WaterAid Nigeria, convened twenty members, who carefully selected from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies responsible for public health planning, environmental management, and cross-sectoral policy coordination.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare earlier mandated Adamawa, Bauchi, Bauchi and Taraba States to establish a Technical Working Group each, with broad membership across the key MDAs, tasked with domesticating the National Climate Change Health Adaptation Plan, HNAP.
The directive followed a master training held in Abuja for selected officers expected to join the TWG, where participants were assigned the responsibility of reviewing Chapter One of the national document for proper state-level contextual interpretation.
During the desk review, participants critically analysed every component of the document, offering technical inputs and recommendations to ensure it fully addresses Bauchi State’s climate-induced health challenges, including disease patterns, environmental risks and emerging public health vulnerabilities.
Members unanimously resolved that the updated version should be transmitted to the national office for verification, technical adjustment and eventual endorsement, which would enable wider training and guide potential interventions to strengthen climate-related health preparedness.
In separate remarks, the TWG Chairman, Abdullahi Dan’asabe and SWAP Consultant Ibrahim Muhammad commended members for their commitment, energy and productive contributions throughout the sessions, noting their resilience and active participation despite the physical demands of fasting during the Ramadan period.
Abdullahi Dan’asabe, who is also the Director of Public Health in the Bauchi State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, expressed appreciation to WaterAid Nigeria for supporting the desk review and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustained partnership on climate-health interventions.
