Gombe State has marked the 2026 World Tuberculosis Day with a renewed campaign for early detection and treatment of the disease.
The Primary Health Care Development Agency, in collaboration with the Leprosy and TB Relief Initiative Nigeria, led the awareness drive under the theme “Yes, We Can End TB.”
The Director of Disease Control and Immunization, Dr. Mustafa Abdullahi, said tuberculosis remains a serious health concern but is curable, with free testing and treatment available across the state.
He noted that increased case detection is due to expanded community screening supported by partners, including the Global Fund.
A TB/HIV Specialist, Dr. John Tunde Aremu, highlighted improvements in diagnosis and reduced stigma, which have encouraged more people to seek treatment.
Also, the State Programme Manager for TB and Leprosy Control, Pharmacist Aliyu Adamu Abdullahi, urged residents to report symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, weight loss, and night sweats at the nearest health facility.
He emphasized that early testing and treatment remain key to ending tuberculosis in the state.
