The Yobe State Police Command has expressed concern over rising cases of youth restrictiveness, substance abuse, and violent clashes among young people in Damaturu, following recent tragic incidents.
In a statement issued on April 7, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said a distress call was received at the ‘A’ Division Police Station over a violent attack in the Bindigari Primary School area.
According to the statement, a 33-year-old man, Adamu Suleiman Saidu, was allegedly attacked by a 24-year-old suspect, Musa Mohammed, also known as “Aljan,” after a disagreement believed to be linked to substance abuse.
The suspect reportedly used an axe, inflicting severe injuries on the victim. Police operatives quickly arrived at the scene, arrested the suspect, and recovered the weapon.
The victim was rushed to the General Hospital in Damaturu but later died while receiving treatment. The police say investigations are ongoing and the suspect will be charged to court.
In a related development, on April 5th the police operatives from the ‘C’ Division in Damaturu responded to another violent incident involving Al’amin Abdullahi Musa, of Abari, and Ibrahim Abdullahi, also of Abari community.
The dispute, said to have started over a borrowed T-shirt, escalated into a fight, during which one of the individuals lost consciousness.
He was taken to the Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, where he was confirmed dead. One suspect has been arrested, and investigations are in progress.
The Police Command is urging parents, community leaders, and civil society organisations to work together with security agencies to address substance abuse among youths, which is increasingly linked to violent crimes.
The Command also called on members of the public to remain law-abiding, resolve disputes peacefully, and report suspicious activities promptly.
