KNSG Receives Co-Creation Report from MAMII on Reducing Maternal Mortality

By Abdullahi Jalalludeen

In a significant step towards reducing maternal mortality, the Kano state government has received a co-creation intervention report document from the national coordinator of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), Dr. Dayo Adeyanju.

The report, which is the outcome of a five-day workshop, identifies actions needed at the community level to create financial or physical access to facilities and eradicate maternal mortality.

Dr. Adeyanju emphasized that implementing the report’s recommendations will mobilize resources for timely intervention, stressing that “women die every minute, and this has to stop now.”

The Kano state government has pledged to adopt the report’s recommendations, recognizing it as a major catalyst to reducing maternal mortality. Development partners, including UNICEF, UNFPA, World Bank, and WHO, have also committed to supporting the initiative.

To develop the report, the team visited ten communities in Kano, gathered evidence, and collaborated with experts from Bangladesh, the United States, and various organizations across Nigeria.

The ministry of health will work with other ministries to upgrade access roads, acknowledging that access is crucial to mitigating maternal mortality.

Nigeria currently faces one of the highest maternal mortality rates globally, with 512 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and 41 neonatal deaths per 1,000 births.

The MAMII project aims to reduce these rates by piloting critical interventions across 17 states.
