The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Small Arms and Light Weapons Community Development Service group, in collaboration with the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, has conducted a sensitisation and relief outreach in Yobe State.

The event, held at the Abujan Mai Mala Internally Displaced Persons camp and the Mohammad Gombe farming community, focused on promoting health and peace among residents. Activities included awareness campaigns on the dangers of illegal weapons, hygiene education, and the distribution of food items.

The North East Director of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, Major General Abubakar Adamu, retired, represented by Aminu Saleh Mohammad, urged displaced persons to remain patriotic despite their challenges.

He noted that tackling the proliferation of illegal arms is key to building a safer and more peaceful Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, NYSC CDS team leader, Bulus Seth Kazachat, said the initiative aims to educate communities on the risks of small arms, promote peaceful coexistence, and provide basic support to those in need.

He encouraged residents to report suspicious activities and individuals carrying illegal weapons to the authorities.

Kazachat also appealed for increased support from relevant authorities, stressing that more assistance is needed to improve the living conditions of displaced persons.

A member of the group, Miracle Ephraim, explained that the initiative was inspired by the growing presence of small arms across the country.

Ephraim emphasised the need for collaboration with security agencies to curb the illegal flow of weapons and empower affected communities.

She further encouraged displaced persons not to give in to fear, but to remain resilient and proactive in protecting themselves through lawful means.

The outreach programme also highlighted the importance of dialogue, early conflict resolution, and community support in fostering lasting peace.
