The Gombe State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Fistula Foundation and the United Nations Population Fund, has commenced free surgery for fistula patients in the state.
Speaking at the flag-off
of the exercise at Kwadon Infectious Hospital, the VVF Desk Officer in the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Garba Mohamed, said between fifty and one hundred fistula patients are expected to benefit from the free surgeries for now.
Dr. Mohamed called on members of the public to stop stigmatising people living with the condition and urged residents to show compassion and support for affected persons.
He appreciated the state government for providing an enabling environment that ensured the success of the exercise.
The Permanent Secretary state Ministry of health Alhaji Idris Yanbiyu, also lauded the Fistula Foundation and the United Nations Population Fund for supporting the initiative.
Represented by the Director of Research, Planning and Statistics in the ministry, Dr. Suraj, the Permanent Secretary reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to sustaining quality healthcare delivery, especially for women and children across the state.
He further called on traditional rulers to intensify awareness campaigns and encourage women living with fistula to take advantage of the free medical treatment.
In a remark, the District Head of Kwadon, Alhassan Abubakar, pledged continued support for the exercise and assured of adequate mobilisation to enable more people to benefit from the programme.
