The Management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU Bauchi has suspended its earlier ban on the use of Gas Cylinders for Cooking in Hostels by students.
To this end, the Students Affairs Division in collaboration with the Students Union Government SUG has already drafted a guideline on the use of gas cylinders and management of hostels by the student population.
The Dean Students’ Affairs of the institution Engineer Professor Sa’id Yusuf Umar stated this at the Orientation of the 2024/25 newly admitted undergraduate students at the 1000 seater lecture hall at Yelwa campus.
Professor Sa’id Umar said after review of the policy, the university agreed to allow for the use of only 3kg cylinder in line with other institution’s best practice, and anyone found using bigger cylinders will have it impounded.
Speaking on Hostel Management and Maintenance, the Deputy Dean Students’ Affairs Dr Aisha Bala Alhassan who hinted that the school is working to introduce periodic sanitation exercise, advised the students to see hostels as their homes and should everything possible to take proper care of the environment.
In a paper titled Fire and Safety on Campus with a Caveat on handling Gas cylinder, the Assistant Superintendent Federal Fire Service ASF Umar Jamil urged the students to always abide by safety protocols when using gas for cooking and call fire emergency lines incase of fire outbreak.
The Former Director Information and Public Relations of the University Dr Andee Iheme who spoke on Campus Life reminder the students to always be guided by the institution’s rules and regulations, and strive for excellence by seeking advise and guidance through the appropriate channels to guarantee their safety and stay in the university.

In a related development, the Newly admitted undergraduate students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU Bauchi have been advised to keep their covenant with the Creator intact by being responsible and avoiding social vices.
The Chief Imam of ATBU Juma’at Mosque Professor Mansur Isa Yelwa and the University Chaplain Pastor Adeyemi Adebenga gave the advice in separate addresses at the 2024/25 orientation of undergraduate students of the institution.
Professor Mansur Isa Yelwa represented by the Chairman University Security Committee Professor Bala Sulaiman Dalhat urged them to fear Allah, concentrate on their studies and shun all negative acts such as socialising with a non-maharam to avoid rustication.
On his part, Pastor Adeyemi Adebenga represented by Mr Benjamin Ameh enjoined them to shun gangsterism, follow the code and conduct of the university religiously as well as respect lecturers, colleagues and dress decently to earn the respect they deserve.
The Assistant Commander Narcotics NDLEA Bauchi Command Bulus Mutuang who categorised drugs into regulated and unregulated, advised the new intakes to shun drug abuse to avoid developing problems in their academic pursuit, physical health which may lead diseases, depression and stigmatisation.
An Alumni of the University and DPO Yelwa Police Division CSP Yahaya Yunusa who listed Internet fraud and drug abuse as some of the ill vices committed by students, advised them to be security conscious of their environment and move in groups to avoid being attacked by hoodlums.
In seperate remarks, a representative of the Tertiary Institutions Social Health Insurance Programme TISHIP Yusuf Mohammad and SUG President Citizen Fahad Abdullahi reminded the students on the need to register with the university clinic to benefit from free medical services such as Antenatal care for married women and management of underlying ailments within and outside of the campus.
Also Speaking, the University Counsellor Babaji Muhammad and Chief Security Officer Umar Idris called on the students to imbibe financial discipline, develop positive self conscience, always move carry a means of identification, report suspicious activities and comply with security checks.
