The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has begun distributing nutritious food to 4,680 malnourished children in Shokari community in Jere, a local government area of Borno State.

In addition to the food aid, FAO is providing energy-saving stoves to 1,000 households impacted by the recent flood disaster.

Officer in Charge of FAO’s North East sub-regional office, Mr. Daouda Doumbia highlighted that this marks the organization’s first intervention for victims of the recent flooding.

Doumbia explained that each child under five will receive 12 kilograms of supplementary food over an eight-week period to improve their nutritional status.

“The Tom Brown supplementary food distribution, made from locally sourced ingredients, is aimed at supporting vulnerable populations affected by the natural disaster and addressing critical food security needs,” Doumbia stated.

He added that FAO also plans to distribute Safe Access to Fuel and Energy (SAFE) kits to help 1,000 households mitigate the environmental impact of the disaster.

“As people begin returning to their communities, this is the time for FAO to work with them to build resilience and improve nutrition in the affected areas,” Doumbia added.

Co-chairman of the Borno State Flood Disaster Relief Distribution Committee, Professor Ibrahim Umara, praised FAO’s timely intervention.

He noted that the support will enhance the nutritional status of children in the aftermath of the flooding.

Umara also commended the provision of fuel-efficient stoves, which he said would reduce deforestation and other environmental challenges.

Two of the beneficiaries, Aisha Laminu and Hauwa Saleh, expressed gratitude to FAO for the assistance, saying it would improve the health and nutrition of their children.
