Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, have donated ₦250 million to 5,000 female petty traders affected by the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri.

The donation was made during a ceremony held in solidarity with the Borno State government and its citizens.

In addition to the financial aid, Senator Tinubu also provided food and non-food items to the flood victims.

She highlighted the Renewed Hope Initiative, through which ₦500 million had previously been donated by Vice President’s wife Nana Shettima to support Governor Babagana Zulum’s efforts in response to the disaster.

“When disasters like this occur, our role is to provide support, and that is why we are here today,” Tinubu stated.

She noted that during the visit to the Shehu of Borno’s palace, the monarch had mentioned that many female traders impacted by the floods had been unable to resume their businesses, prompting the decision to offer additional assistance.

“Mrs. Shettima and I discussed on our way here, and we decided to provide another ₦250 million to help 5,000 female petty traders, each receiving ₦50,000. We hope this disaster will be the last of its kind in Borno and Nigeria,” Tinubu added.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum acknowledged the Federal Government’s ongoing support and praised the First Lady for her consistent assistance to the less privileged, even before the floods.

“On behalf of the people and government of Borno State, I express our deepest appreciation to the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and to you, the First Lady, for your unwavering support to the people of this state, especially the less privileged,” Zulum said.

The First Lady was accompanied on her visit by the wives of the Vice President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy Senate President, and the Governors of Delta, Yobe, and Niger States.

In a related development, the Federation of Nigeria Pharmaceutical Industrial Association, in collaboration with the Academy of Pharmacists in Nigeria, has donated various life-saving drugs, including antibiotics and anti-malaria medication, to the Borno State government.

The donation was presented by the Coordinating Minister of Health, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate, during the distribution of relief items to flood victims.

Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to both organizations for their contribution to the state’s healthcare needs.
