An environmental expert has called for immediate action to avert the increasing threat of floods in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview, Professor Benjamin Gurmamu from the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering at Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola emphasized the need for swift responses to early flood warning systems, stressing that timely responses could help mitigate the devastating impact of flooding.

“We need to pay more attention to early warning signs to prevent floods, rather than waiting for the consequences to unfold,” Gurmamu said.

He further urged the government to strengthen policies designed to address flood risks and ensure prompt intervention.

Prof. Gurmamu also highlighted the need for accountability, suggesting that individuals who refuse to vacate flood-prone areas should face penalties.

He called on the government and relevant agencies to provide suitable accommodations for flood victims to encourage compliance with relocation orders.

On environmental issues, Gurmamu advocated for embracing the monthly sanitation programme reintroduced by the state government. “Clearing out drainages is essential in preventing floods, and regular sanitation can help reduce blockages that contribute to these disasters,” he noted.

Addressing broader environmental concerns, the professor advised adopting the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce emissions and combat climate change.

He also urged farmers to embrace organic farming practices to protect the planet from further degradation.

“Human activities that destroy the environment must stop. Using organic materials on farms will contribute significantly to environmental sustainability,” Gurmamu concluded.

Prof. Gurmamu’s call comes at a time when many communities in Adamawa and across Nigeria are grappling with the increasing frequency and intensity of floods, alongside the global push for environmental preservation.
