The Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) has matriculated 2,229 students for the 2023/2024 academic session.
Speaking at the institution’s 11th matriculation ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mu’azu Abubakar Gusau, acknowledged the security challenges in Zamfara State, assured them of the institution’s commitment to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
He revealed that out of 5,066 applicants, a total 2,229 were admitted, with science-related courses recording the highest enrolment in line with the Federal Government’s policy.
Professor Gusau who informed that out of the number, 1,030 students were admitted into various science disciplines, urged the newly admitted students to be security-conscious and to report any suspicious activities to security agencies or university authorities for prompt action.
He also warned that the university has zero tolerance for misconduct, stressing that offences such as examination malpractice, cultism, sexual harassment, theft, and drug abuse would attract strict penalties as stipulated in the student handbook.
“Between today’s matriculation and your convocation, you will face various academic and personal challenges. Overcoming them will earn you the right to wear the academic gown again,” he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the university has commenced programmes in the College of Health Sciences and admitted 97 students for MBBS and 34 for Dental Surgery.
Addressing the new students, the instruction’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Mu’awiyya Umar Ladan, stressed that degrees are awarded only to those found worthy in both character and learning.
Some of the matriculating students interviewed expressed delight and pledged to focus on their studies while upholding the good reputation of the university.
