The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA says it has seized 4 764, 893kg of cannabis sativa and 0. 582kg of psychotropic substance totaling 4, 764. 893kg in May this year.
The Nasarawa State Commander of the NDLEA Mr Dechi Elisha-David, stated this to journalists in lafia, the atate capital.
The commander explained that one of the dangers being faced in the state and the country is the influx of prohibited substances, most especially cannabis sativa.
According to him, the officers of the command are up and doing daily to ensure minimum reduction in the demand, supply, and sales of illicit drugs.
He further emphasised that the feats in May were made possible when his officers dismantled some drug joints in different parts of the state.
“On Friday, May 16, around Karu Local Government Area (LGA), one Welman Kengbo, male, 60 years, was arrested with 59 and a half bags of cannabis sativa, weighing 594.8kg.
“On 21 May, one Godwin Obi, male, 39 years was arrested in the same Karu with 14 and half bags of cannabis sativa, weighing 155kg.
“On 24 May, two suspects, Sunday Daniel and Obu Peters, all male, were arrested with 387 bags weighing 4, 000kg,” he added.
The commander said that the suspects apprehended were helping them track down other syndicate members.
He added that those arrested would be charged to court for prosecution in line with the law.
The state commander maintained that they had embarked on massive awareness and counseling towards educating the public on the dangers of selling or consuming illicit drugs.
“We visit 30 public places, including schools, market places among others, in May alone on our War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign.
“We sensitised 11 107 people, comprising 6 021 males and 5 086 females, and counseled 149 males and six females on the dangers of hard drugs,” Elisha-David added.
He used the medium and appreciated the Gov. Abdullahi Sule for the logistics support to the agency to ensure that they operate smoothly.
Mr. Elisha-David also appreciated the support from other security agencies in the state as well as members of the public in their efforts to tackle dealers of illegal and dangerous substances..
