World Sight Day: Northeast has the highest burden of Blindness in Nigeria.

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi, Department of Ophthalmology has conducted Free eye screening at Bauchi Mechanical Village to mark this year’s world sight day.

Speaking an Ophthalmologist Dr Fumilayo Oyediji explain that every 12 day of October is a day set aside to create more awareness on eye related visual impairment challenges.

Dr Fumilayo Oyedije said the targeted Mechanics, Welders and Capenters because of the risk involve in their work which negatively affect their Vision.

The Ophthalmologist explain that the Screening is designed to cover all age groups and free drugs and glasses will be given to those in need as part of their cooperate social responsibility.

She said the major courses of blindness include Cataract, Glaucoma, trachoma, age related macular regeneration, uncorrected refractive errors among others.

The Ophthalmologist said according to 2005- 2007 Nigeria national blindness survey, Northeast region has the highest burden of blindness in the country and therefore called on states to do more in addressing the negative indices.

Dr Oyedije emphases that people who regularly use computers are at the risk of developing dry eye syndrome and therefore appeal to them to be observing break after each twenty minutes and rest before the continue.

The Ophthalmologist use the medium to appeal to citizens to go for regular eye check to safeguard their vision.

Some of the beneficiaries Jorge Patric Onyechi and Yahaya Bello Commended the Ophthalmologists for coming to their aid and urged people to always take good care of their eyes.

The theme for this year is Love your Eyes at Work.
