Wikimedia User Group Nigeria (WUGN) has made significant strides in transforming Nigeria’s knowledge ecosystem since its establishment in 2015.

According to a statement by the President of Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation, to mark the organisation’s 10th anniversary, Mr Olushola Olaniyan, the organisation has achieved its vision of making knowledge freely accessible to all Nigerians, while showcasing the country’s culture, heritage, and people globally.

Notably, WUGN has created or improved over 50,000 articles and data entries related to Nigeria on Wikipedia and Wikidata.

It’s pointed out that more than 70,000 freely licensed photographs of Nigerian culture, heritage, and communities have been contributed to Wikimedia Commons.

The organisation has also made significant contributions to heritage and cultural preservation, documenting 83 historic monuments, 54 traditional festivals, and preserving endangered languages through the Nigeria Oral History Project.

The statement indicates that WUGN has promoted inclusivity in knowledge representation, adding over 2,000 new biographies of Nigerian women to Wikipedia through initiatives like Wiki Loves Women and Art+Feminism.

Overall, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria has established itself as a driving force in Nigeria’s knowledge ecosystem, leaving a lasting impact across education, culture, advocacy, and digital inclusion.
