The Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to youth rehabilitation and improved security through strategic investments in education and non-kinetic interventions.
This was stated by the Chief of Staff to the Kano State Government House, Dr. Suleiman Wali Sani, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the 65th Independence Day celebration at the Coronation Hall Government House.
Dr. Wali noted that the administration is using education as a powerful tool to reintegrate repentant youths and curb crime.
He said the government’s flagship security strategy, the Safe Corridor Initiative The Kano Model, is addressing political thuggery, phone snatching, drug abuse, and other forms of youth restiveness across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, explained that the initiative targets two key groups: voluntarily repentant political thugs and drug users. The programme offers de-radicalization, psychosocial support, rehabilitation, empowerment, and reintegration into society.
Waiya said the initiative has been implemented in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), noting that the police arrest between 50 to 70 youths weekly for drug-related offenses. He added that NDLEA Kano Command recorded 1,345 drug suspects in 2024, including 1,301 males and 44 females.
“Under the initiative, the state government identifies and profiles ring leaders of violent youth groups, builds a database of school dropouts and vulnerable youth, and provides them with counseling, mentorship, and skills acquisition training.”
“Many beneficiaries have reportedly returned to school or taken up small-scale businesses after rehabilitation.”
Dr. Wali said the programme reflects the administration’s broader commitment to peace, development, and social justice. He urged the people of Kano to continue supporting government policies and also called on eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of future elections.
The Independence Day celebration was attended by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, civil society organisations, public school students, government officials, and members of the press.
