The Sharing Education and Learning for Life Foundation (SELL Foundation) has organised a two-day training for couples on family cohesion in Yobe State, aimed at strengthening homes and promoting peaceful coexistence within communities.
The training, which also featured the launch of a Community Ambassador Scheme, brought together 15 couples from diverse generations, religious backgrounds, and communities across the state.
Speaking at the event held in Damaturu, the Project Manager of the foundation, Beji Jibe, said the initiative was designed to create a platform for couples to reflect on family values, revisit traditional models that once fostered unity, and address contemporary challenges affecting homes.
He explained that discussions during the training covered parenting, gender roles, socialisation processes for children, financial management, work-life balance, and the importance of self-care.
According to him, the training emphasised the need for couples to take responsibility not only within their homes but also in their neighbourhoods, especially in addressing issues such as domestic violence and conflict before they escalate.
Mr Jibe said at the end of the programme, the participants were designated as Community Ambassadors and tasked with sharing the knowledge gained in their respective mosques, churches, and social circles.
The foundation disclosed plans for a follow-up visit to assess the impact of the training and determine further engagement with participating families.
He added that the programme was conducted in partnership with the Women and Girls Dignity Centre and other local organisations, which will provide reconciliation and alternative dispute resolution services where necessary.
In their remarks, some of the participants described the training as impactful.
Mr Timothy Augustine noted that it had strengthened unity and mutual respect in his family.
He pledged to lead by example and promote the message of family cohesion among friends and colleagues.
Mallam Abubakar Musa said he learned a lot, especially about how to resolve issues concerning domestic violence amicably without escalation.
Also speaking, Mrs Agnes Emos said she was equipped with the knowledge that respecting each other’s opinions is a key factor in strengthening peaceful coexistence among couples.
The SELL Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to building stronger families as a pathway to sustainable peace and development in Yobe State.
