The General Manager of the Yobe State Environmental Protection Agency, YOSEPA, Sanitarian Babagana Modu, has called on residents to maintain proper environmental sanitation to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as malaria, typhoid, and cholera.
According to a statement issued by the Information Officer of the Agency, Mamman Hussaini, the General Manager made the call while responding to reported sanitation challenges in some parts of Damaturu, including a soakaway issue at Golden Souk Plaza, as well as concerns at Bindigari Primary School and the Babban Tsangaya area.
Babagana Modu disclosed that the agency has already taken steps to address liquid waste management at Golden Souk and has directed its zonal office in Damaturu to work closely with the local government environmental sanitation unit under the primary healthcare department to tackle sanitation challenges in the state capital.
He noted that the primary healthcare sanitation department currently has more environmental health officers than the agency, due to the retirement of many of its staff.
The GM YOSEPA commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for approving the recruitment of new officers, who have now been deployed to the agency.
Modu assured that full-scale sanitation activities, including Dubagari operations, will commence across the state once the newly recruited officers are fully on duty.
He emphasised that diseases such as malaria, typhoid, and cholera are largely caused by poor environmental sanitation and urged residents to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
On the resumption of the monthly sanitation exercise, the General Manager pointed out that the proposals have been submitted to the state government and expressed optimism for a favourable response.
He further commended the state government for establishing a committee on keeping Damaturu clean, noting that it has yielded positive results.
