Nigerian Red Cross Society has called on Bauchi State government to strengthen its supervision mechanism on the monthly sanitation exercise with a view to reduce risks in the state.

The Disaster Management Officer of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Bauchi State Branch, Hassan Yahaya made the call in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Bauchi.

The Society has conducted a sanitation exercise in commemoration of this year’s International Day for Risk Reduction, with the theme “Fighting inequality for a resilient future”.

Hassan Yahaya said the call was imperative in view of the negative attitude of people in the state towards the observance of the monthly sanitation exercise as declared by the state government.

He said the idea of the monthly exercise was to ensure clean and hygienic environment, however observed that the essence was defeated.

Yahaya described as pathetic that instead of people to come out to clean their environment, they prefer to sleep in their houses during the hours declared by government.

Yahaya said Nigerian Red Cross Society has made it a duty upon itself to embark on sanitation exercise with a view to creating awareness among people on the significance of the International Day for Risk Reduction, which is being celebrated annually on October 13th.
