The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has firmly dissociated itself from reported plans by some of its members to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that neither the state chapter nor the national leadership of the party has endorsed such a move.

In a press statement issued in Kano on Monday, the NNPP State Chairman, Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, said the party was fully aware of recent political developments involving certain individuals allegedly preparing to dump the NNPP for the APC. He stressed, however, that the contemplated defections do not enjoy the support of the party at any level.

Dungurawa declared that the Kano State chapter, the national leadership of the NNPP and the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, are united in their opposition to any defection from the party. He described the NNPP as a disciplined political family founded on shared ideals and a clear vision for the development of Kano State and Nigeria at large.

According to him, the party had made several efforts to persuade those concerned to exercise patience and remain within the NNPP fold, noting that the leadership has both a moral responsibility to its members and a broader obligation to the people of Kano State who entrusted the party with their mandate.

“Despite our repeated interventions and appeals, the situation has become increasingly difficult to manage,” Dungurawa said. “We once again appeal to them, for the sake of Allah and the Prophet, not to abandon this party and not to defect to a party we have consistently opposed and which the masses and voters have rejected.”

The NNPP chairman reaffirmed that the party remains committed to the welfare of ordinary citizens, particularly the masses who are currently grappling with economic hardship. He said the NNPP’s political philosophy is rooted in people-oriented governance and social justice.

He further restated that the party’s vision, as clearly outlined in its constitution, prioritises the development of key sectors such as education, agriculture, commerce and economic empowerment. Dungurawa urged party members to remain steadfast and work collectively to advance policies and programmes aimed at reducing suffering and promoting inclusive development in Kano State and beyond.

The state chairman also used the opportunity to dismiss what he described as unfounded rumours circulating in some quarters, including allegations that certain party figures were attempting to create a rift between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He specifically debunked claims linking the Deputy Governor, Senator Rufai Hanga, Sanusi Surajo and himself to such alleged plots, describing the accusations as baseless and mischievous. According to him, the rumours are a by-product of the strong bond, loyalty and mutual respect existing among NNPP leaders and their national leader.

Dungurawa maintained that no individual or group within the NNPP has acted, or is acting, to undermine Senator Kwankwaso, challenging anyone with evidence to the contrary to make it public.

He assured supporters that the NNPP in Kano remains united, focused and committed to delivering good governance and protecting the mandate given to it by the people.
