The North East Development Commission, NEDC, has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of ongoing bridge projects in some communities across Gombe State as part of efforts to improve rural access and enhance infrastructure development.
The assessment team visited bridge projects located at Northern Bypass, Oji Bridge along Dukku Road, Tabra along the bypass and Tsandu communities.
Speaking after the inspection, the Coordinator of the Commission in Gombe State, Architect Usman Muhammad, expressed satisfaction with the progress of work recorded on the projects. He however called on contractors handling some of the projects to speed up construction activities and ensure completion before the commencement of the rainy season.
Architect Usman Muhammad disclosed that in addition to the bridge under construction in Tabra community, the Commission would also construct a five-hundred-meter access road linking the bridge to the community.
He urged contractors to strictly adhere to the specifications of the contracts and ensure timely delivery of the projects within the agreed timeframe. The coordinator also appealed to benefiting communities to continue cooperating with contractors and take ownership of the projects for their sustainability.
Also speaking during the inspection, the Permanent Secretary of the Gombe State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, Danladi Adamu, said the projects were initiated to address the long-standing challenges of access faced by the affected communities.
According to him, streams and flooding had for many years hindered movement and economic activities in the areas, adding that the state government in collaboration with the North East Development Commission intervened to provide lasting solutions to the problem.
Danladi Adamu noted that both the Gombe State Government and the NEDC were impressed with the quality and level of work achieved so far on the projects.
A community leader in Tabra, Abdulrahman Jibrin, commended the NEDC and the Gombe State Government for bringing the project to the community. He explained that residents had suffered severe flooding for more than ten years, resulting in the loss of lives and difficulties in movement.
He added that members of the community had continued to cooperate with contractors to ensure the successful completion of the bridge project.
