Bauchi Gov’t Hails USAID Funded Momentum Program, Pledges Sustainability

Bauchi State government assures to consolidate and sustain the good work and interventions provided by the USAID funded Momentum, Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics, EngenderHealth project to improve maternal and child health in the state.

The State Commissioner of Health, Dr Adamu Sambo gave the assurance at the Bauchi State Sustainability and Scale-Up Meeting organized by the project held in Bauchi.

Dr Adamu Sambo said the interventions provided by the Momentum, Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics, EngenderHealth project, were enormous, among which are reduction in maternal and child morality as well as improved healthcare services in the state.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman, State Hospital’s Management Board, Dr Sambo Alkali who underscored the commitment of the state government in continuing the good work done, said secondary and tertiary health facilities have led the implementation of innovative strategies and best practices to improve maternal and child health outcomes.

According to him, through dedicated efforts, the state has witnessed significant improvements in the quality of care, especially in maternal and child health and safe Caesarean deliveries.

The Project’s Senior Clinical Associate, Umar Abdulrazak said the Momentum Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics has offered fistula and safe surgery interventions in Bauchi, Ebonyi Kebbi and Sokoto states as well as the FCT.

Abdulrazak said over the last three years in Bauchi state, the project had trained a significant number of health care workers on Fistula Management and Minor Repairs and also supported the institutionalization of some checklist and standard tools that are being used globally to improve healthcare outcomes.

He said in Bauchi state the project had reached out to over two hundred thousand people with key message on prevention of fistula cases among women of reproductive age.

He applauded Bauchi state government for providing enabling environment which aided the smooth implementation of the project.
