The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano Branch, has decried the inability of the Government to addressing lingering issues bedevelling the development of the Nigerian Universities

The Chairman of the Union Dr Mansur Said disclosed this during a media briefing at the University in Kano.

He said the union has condemned the government’s failure to fulfill promises made, leading to erosion of trust and worsening socio-economic conditions.

“The union condemns the Government’s antics as they
continue to fail in fulfilling the promises they took with a view to addressing the issues in contention, leading to erosion of trust, displeasure and
skepticism. “

The union highlighted core issues, including the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, salary arrears, and academic allowances.

ASUU YUMSK expressed concern over the dissolution of governing councils and the breach of university autonomy and academic freedom.

“ASUU-YUMSUK is worried about the growing spate of insecurity,
worsening poverty, rising cost of living, livelihood displacement and
heightened destitution in the country occasioned by the ruthless imposition
of IMF/World Bank inspired neoliberal reforms that displaced Nigerian
economy from largest to fourth largest economy in Africa. “

The Union called on the government to address these issues, ensure sustainable funding, and restore the glory of Nigerian universities.

“YUMSUK calls on the President Tinubu-led and Governor Yusuf-led Administrations and all relevant stakeholders to with immediate effect work towards reconstituting the committee with a view to reviewing, signing and implementing the Nimi Briggs-led
renegotiated draft agreement. “

Dr Mansur Sai’id urged the public to support their struggle for better funding and conditions in universities.
