The North East Development Commission NEDC in collaboration with Yola Electricity Distribution Company YEDC has organised eight weeks training for sixty electrical technicians.

Managing Director of the Commission Alhaji Mohammed Alkali said the training is to create job opportunities for youths across the six states in the region.

Addressing the participants at the NEDC headquarters in Maiduguri, Alhaji Alkali said the Commission will partner with the Mainstream Academy in Kainji, Niger state to enhance the skills of the unemployed youths with requisite qualification and fill the existing vacancies in the geopolitical zone.

He noted that the unbundling of the power sector by the federal government and subsequent retrenchment of some personnel of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), created a vacuum on manpower needs throughout the  country.

“The NEDC in pursuance of one of its core mandate of identifying factors inhibiting development of the zone and assist member -states and other stakeholders in the formulation of policies to ensure sound and efficient management of resources of the zone among others, collaborate with the Mainstream Academy a subsidiary of Mainstream Energy Solution and organised skill training for 60 youth of the zone extraction (Electrical Technicians)” Alkali said.

The Managing Director said the Commission has been collaborating with stakeholders in public and private sectors to enhance technical skills of unemployed youths in the region, to enable them compete favourably with their counterparts in other parts of the country.

He cautioned participants against indulging in any form of vices and concentrate on the training to better their lives.

Executive Director Humanitarian Affairs of the Commission, Malam Musa Yashi, said the trainees comprised of fifty male and ten female which involved two weeks classwork and six weeks practical training, urging them to concentrate on the training and exhibit good conduct throughout the period.

Executive Secretary Mainstream Academy Usman Mohammed said the eight weeks training will include linemen training, fixing and installation, connecting and reconnecting of distribution line among others.
