The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADFund), in collaboration with the Yobe State Government, has launched an Agricultural Intervention Programme aimed at supporting over 2,000 onion farmers affected by recent flooding and climate-related shocks in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event held in Damaturu, the Yobe State Capital, the Executive Secretary of NADFund, Mohammed Habu Ibrahim, represented by Mikai’la Haruna Daya, explained that the first phase of the programme involves distributing inputs to farmers in states like Sokoto, Kebbi, Yobe, and Borno.
According to Executive Secretary, NADFund, the intervention aims to restore production capacity, strengthen resilience, and ensure farmers can return to their fields.
He pointed out that NADFund is committed to supporting vulnerable farming communities, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem.
The onion value chain is a key contributor to livelihoods, nutrition, and rural economic development.
Mohammed Ibrahim added that NADFund will work closely with the Yobe State Government to monitor implementation and provide additional support, committed to transparency, accountability, and equity throughout the exercise.
Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by the Commissioner of the Ministry for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Ali Mustapha Goniri, expressed appreciation for NADFund’s support, particularly in improving onion production.
Buni explained that the state government remains committed to supporting onion and vegetable farmers, strengthening agricultural productivity, and consolidating Yobe State’s position as a major contributor to Nigeria’s agricultural production.
He, therefore, said, intervention is expected to positively impact household incomes, local markets, and national food supply.
The distributed items include fertiliser, certified seeds, and pesticide among others.
