A two-day Media Dialogue to commemorate 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) has commenced in Gombe State capital.

The dialogue is organized by the United Nations Childre’s Fund (UNICEF) Bauchi Field Office with participation of Journalists from Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Plateau states.

It has specific focus on Investing in Women with the conviction that they are important in bringing about change in their respective communities.

In an opening remark, the UNICEF Chief of Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Tushar Rane said the gathering was to learn the remarkable achievements of community-based women in the health sector of the field office’s intervening states of Bauchi, Gombe and Taraba through the Mama2Mama Support Group initiative.

Dr. Rane said ensuring gender equality and promoting women’s well-being in all facets of life was paramount for building prosperous economies and fostering a healthy planet.

He noted that the International Women’s Day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work that still needs to be done.

According to the Chief of UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, IWD is a day to honor the innovative women who have paved the way for future generations.

Women he said “often act as health advocates and educators within their communities. They raise awareness about health issues and encourage community members to seek healthcare when needed.”

Dr. Tushar Rane said women who are endowed with the right knowledge, could effectively lead or participate in community health initiatives, such as vaccination campaigns.

“Their involvement fosters community cohesion and increases the effectiveness of health interventions” – Dr. Rane said.

He noted that IWD is a day to recognize the invaluable contributions of women in every sphere of society, from politics and business to science, arts, and beyond.

The theme for the 2024 International Women’s Day campaign is “Inspire Inclusion”. This underscores the importance of creating an inclusive society where women are valued, respected, and empowered to participate fully in all aspects of life.
