400 Seedlings distributed to women and Youth to Mitigate Climate Change in Bauchi Communities.

The Rural Urban women Green Initiative in collaboration with Bauchi State environmental protection agency has distribute Four Hundred Seedlings to women and Youth in Gubi and Ruda Yausa Villages of Bauchi and Ganjuwa Local Government areas.

Speaking During the Distribution exercise the Chairperson of the initiative, Professor Khadija Bello said the gesture is geared toward reducing the negative impact of Global warming and desert encroachment.

Professor Khadija Bello said the initiative was the brainchild of 9 women Lecturers from the faculty of Agriculture ATBU, born out of their desire to conserved the Environment especially in communities around the Institution.

According to her the objectives of the initiative include improve nutritional value of the Household and empowering women and Youth.

“Insha Allah in the future we intend to teach women how to process their food to enhance the nutrition of the family with this we hope to reduce maternal and infant moterlity.
We are also venturing how to empower women given them ideas on how the can be gainfully engaged not only women but the Youth also”

The Chairperson who said out of the 400 seedlings distributed 200 were economic trees that includes Mango, Cashua, guava, Moringa, lemon among others.

Professor Khadija Bello enjoined the beneficiaries to take care of the seedlings to fruition.

She reiterate that the would be visiting the area to see the situation from time to time.

“We are struggling with a lot of issues that has to do with degredation of the Environment because of human activities, this is an effort to plant the trees so as to reduce the negative impact of human activities that includes bush burning and Charcoal production “

In a remark the Acting Vice Chancellor Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi Professor Usman Kunya Commended the women Lecturers for the initiative as part of their effort to give back to the society.

Professor Sani Usman Kunya who represented by the Dean Faculty of Agriculture ATBU Professor Ambrose Amba decried the indiscriminate Felling of trees without planting new ones which is affecting the livelihood and Health of the people.

“The coming of this intervention by the Rural Urban women Green Initiative is a positive one and we come to encourage them and to support them especially the University as a whole. The Acting Vice Chancellor has directed me to inform the gathering that a bigger thing is coming the will cover the entire University

Professor Usman Kunya emphasis that planting a tree will go along way in sustaining the environment that is fast degreding.

On his part Director General Bauchi State Environmental protection Agency BASEPA Dr Mahmoud Muhammad Bose warned people against the dangers associated with cutting down trees.

Dr Mahmoud Bose who was represented by the Director Inspection and Enforcement Alhaji Muhammad Usman Sale Commended the ATBU Agric women Lecturers for the initiative aim at empowering women with economic trees.

Speaking the Village Head of Gubi Malam Muhammad Yakubu assured the commitment of the beneficiaries in raising the trees to maturity.
