The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced the evacuation of a 15-kilometer drainage channel in Yobe to mitigate flooding caused by global warming.

During an inspection of the clearance activities underway in several drainage systems and waterways across Damaturu, Yobe State, NEDC Coordinator, Prof. Ali Ibrahim Abbas, stated that the purpose of the inspection is to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

Prof. Abbas explained that the NEDC is committed to supporting the Yobe State Government, as significant work is required for drainage evacuation in the state. He noted that this year’s rainfall has been highly unpredictable, prompting the commission to supervise the evacuation of drainage systems along Gujba Road, from the Samaila Nguru axis, moving into the Nyanya and Malari communities, and linking up with the Damaturu-Maiduguri and Postikum bypass.

Additionally, Prof. Abbas mentioned that the commission is working to clear drainage systems in major towns, including Nguru, Gashua, Potiskum, Damagum, Buni-Yadi, and Geidam, among others.

He praised the Yobe State Government for its support and commitment to this initiative.

Yobe State Commissioner for Environment, Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, also expressed appreciation to the NEDC for collaborating with the state to improve culverts and drainage systems.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Tunga Betara Bularafa, the commissioner urged all residents to refrain from dumping waste in the drainage systems to prevent flooding.
