A fire incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Gombe Old Market, commonly known as Kasuwan Cross, resulting in the destruction of at least 17 shops along with goods worth millions of Naira.

The Deputy Chairman of Gombe Old Market, Alhaji Baba Inuwa Mai-Goro, shared this information in an interview with Radio Nigeria.

According to Alhaji Baba Inuwa, the fire started around 1 AM when one of the market’s security personnel noticed it and immediately alerted the fire service and shop owners using the phone numbers displayed on the shop walls.

He explained that the fire was brought under control by the efforts of shop owners, volunteers, and the fire service.

However, he lamented that some hoodlums took advantage of the situation and forcefully looted goods from people’s shops.

The Old Market Deputy Chairman expressed concern about the lack of adequate lighting during power outages, making it difficult to ascertain whether the fire was intentionally set by the hoodlums in the area, as speculated by some shop owners.

Alhaji Baba Inuwa called on the Gombe state government, wealthy individuals, and fellow businesses to extend support by providing solar lights for the market area and helping those who lost their means of livelihood in the fire.
